Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good vehicle for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the home of a member of jury. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She was hired in 1999 and established her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
